Philadelphia aka “The City of Brotherly Love” is the birthplace of America. Where the greatest nation in the world was born in 1776. It’s known for its American history, passionate sports fans, and Rocky Balboa bashing up Ivan Drago. What most people don’t know is that Philly is also known for some excellent foods. Foods that aren’t necessarily found just in Philadelphia, but are a staple of the average Philadelphians daily diet. Some experts say that’s the world famous “South Philly Diet”.
In this weeks post I am going to rate and rank my favorite cities best 5 foods. If you are a Philly native or traveling to Philly in the future, you need to try these foods. You will not regret it, I can guarantee that.
5 – Philly Cheesesteak
Perhaps Philadelphia’s most famous sandwich, you really can’t go wrong with this Philly classic. It’s number 5 for me because living abroad and away from Philadelphia for so long has tainted the sandwich for me. There are way too many knock offs around the world that does not do justice for the Cheesesteak. There are also many components to a good cheesesteak, the roll, meat quality, cheese selection, and onions or no onions. Personally, I am a cheese wiz and onions guy, or a “wiz wit”.
4 – Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak
I call this sandwich the “under the radar” sandwich. I count this as a Philly food because there is no other place in the world where you can get one of these at any bar or restaurant. They are everywhere and so delicious. I prefer the Buffalo Chicken to a normal Cheesesteak.
3 – Soft Pretzel
The ultimate sandwich sidekick that will satisfy your craving for carbs. This Philly staple is my favorite snack of all time. Yes I said it. All time. Unlike your other soft pretzel design, these pretzels look like this below.
2 – Wooder Ice
“Yo dood lemme geta cherry wooder ice?” If you are anywhere around South Philadelphia during the spring or summertime, you might hear this phrase. Also known as Italian Ice, this Philly treat is tough to describe because its so good. Kind of like a thicker, icier slushie. Crushed ice and artificial flavoring. However you describe it, it’s a must when visiting Philly. I suggest going with grape, lemon or my favorite, mango.
1 – Hot Roast Pork
My favorite Philly food and as you can tell from this list, my favorite sandwich. Philadelphia is a sandwich city, probably the best sandwich city in America. Hot Roast Pork with sharp provolone cheese, broccoli rabe, long hots (peppers) on a seed roll would be my last meal on earth. I would have a soft pretzel on the side and a wooder ice for dessert.
I have left off Wawa and Wawa hoagies on my top 5 because of the decline in quality to Wawa hoagies. If you have a different top 5, comment below. As always, if you ever visit Philadelphia, please PM me for recommendations.
